How eBay's Fees Are Calculated

eBay charges one final value fee when an item sells: a percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a per-order fee. The total includes shipping and sales tax, so the fee is larger than the percentage of the item price alone.

Final Value Fee

Fee = rate x (item + shipping + sales tax) + per-order fee

The rate depends on the category and your Store level. For most categories with no Store it is 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% above $7,500. The per-order fee is $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 above that.

Net Payout

Payout = item price + shipping charged - eBay fees

Sales tax is collected on top of the price and is not part of your payout, but eBay's fee is calculated on it. That is why a calculator that only uses the item price understates the fee.

Profit And Margin

Profit = payout - cost of goods - shipping you pay

Margin is profit divided by item price plus shipping charged. For ad spend and ROAS on top of this, use the dropshipping calculator.

eBay's Own Example, Worked Through

On its selling fees page, eBay prices a $400.00 item with free shipping and 6% sales tax. The total amount of the sale is $424.00, so the final value fee is 13.6% of $424.00 plus $0.40, which is $58.06. With the $0.35 insertion fee, total fees are $58.41 and the seller keeps $341.59. Enter those numbers above (item $400.00, shipping $0, sales tax 6%, insertion fee ticked) and the calculator returns the same figures.

eBay Final Value Fee Rates By Category

The final value fee is not one flat rate. These are the percentages for US sellers on ebay.com as of September 29, 2026. The per-order fee is added on top in every row. A "then" rate applies only to the part of the sale above the threshold; an "if" rate applies to the whole amount.

Other eBay Fees To Know

The calculator includes international fees, Promoted Listings and, optionally, the insertion fee. These are the other fees eBay can charge.

International Fee

1.65% of the total amount of the sale, for US-registered sellers not using eBay International Shipping, when the buyer's delivery address or registered address is outside the US. There is no international fee with eBay International Shipping.

Promoted Listings

Optional and separate from the final value fee. On the general strategy you set an ad rate of 2% to 100% of the total sale amount, and pay only when a buyer clicks the ad and buys within 30 days.

Insertion Fees

Every seller gets up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month, more with a Store. After that it is $0.35 per listing with no Store, and it is not refunded if the item does not sell.

Seller Performance Surcharges

An extra 6% of the final value fee if your seller level is Below Standard (7% after four or more months), and 5% if "item not as described" returns are Very High (6% after four or more months).

Dispute Fee

$20.00 per dispute when you are found responsible for a disputed amount under eBay's policies, for example a chargeback.

Currency Conversion

3% for US-registered sellers when eBay converts your funds for an item listed or sold on another eBay site. It rises to 3.25% from October 14, 2026.

eBay vs Shopify Fees

The same $55.00 sale ($50.00 item plus $5.00 shipping, no sales tax) costs very different amounts on eBay and on your own Shopify store. The fees below are only part of the picture, because eBay brings its own buyers and a Shopify store does not.

eBay's fee includes payment processing and access to eBay's buyers. On Shopify the per-sale fee is smaller, but you supply the traffic, and a listing that converts on eBay does not automatically convert on a store with no reviews or brand behind it. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee on the Basic plan. Shopify figures are US pricing from shopify.com/pricing, as of September 2026, and assume the card fee applies to the item price plus shipping. The eBay figures are the final value fee at the default category rate, without insertion fees.

eBay Fee Calculator FAQs

How much does eBay charge to sell something?

For most categories on ebay.com, the final value fee is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the portion above that, plus a per-order fee of $0.40, or $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less. Some categories cost more or less, such as 15.3% for books, movies and music and 6.7% for guitars and basses, and eBay Store subscribers on Basic or higher pay lower rates in most categories. Every seller also gets up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month, then $0.35 per listing without a Store. Use the calculator above for the exact fee in your category and at your Store level.

What is the eBay final value fee charged on?

eBay charges the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, not on the item price alone. That total includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping you collect from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees. In eBay's own example, a $400.00 item with free shipping and 6% sales tax has a total sale amount of $424.00, so the final value fee is 13.6% of $424.00 plus $0.40, which is $58.06. A calculator that applies the percentage to the item price alone understates the fee.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes, on both. The shipping you charge the buyer and the sales tax collected on the order are part of the total amount of the sale, so the final value fee applies to them. There are exceptions: if you offer 1-day or international shipping alongside a cheaper or free option, the fee is based on your cheapest domestic option; and if you ship with eBay International Shipping, the fee on shipping is based on your cost to ship to the US shipping hub, with no fee on shipping if you offered free domestic shipping. The tax itself is not part of your payout: in eBay's example the seller keeps $400.00 minus fees, not $424.00 minus fees. Enter your buyer's sales tax rate in the calculator to include it.

What is eBay's per-order fee?

The per-order fee is added to the percentage fee on every sale: $0.30 when the total amount of the sale is $10.00 or less, and $0.40 when it is over $10.00. eBay defines an order as any number of items bought by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method, so one order pays one per-order fee. It is not charged on athletic shoes sold at $150 or more.

How do eBay Store subscriptions change the fees?

A Store changes the monthly subscription, the number of free listings, and, from Basic up, the final value fee rate. Starter ($4.95 a month with yearly renewal, $7.95 with monthly renewal) pays the same final value fee rates as a seller with no Store. Basic, Premium, Anchor and Enterprise pay lower rates in most categories: for most categories that is 12.7% up to $2,500 instead of 13.6% up to $7,500. The higher tiers also get many more free fixed-price listings and a lower insertion fee after the allowance. The tables on this page list each tier and every category.

What are eBay's international fees?

If your registered address is in the US and you do not use eBay International Shipping, eBay adds an international fee of 1.65% of the total amount of the sale when the buyer's delivery address or registered address is outside the US. With eBay International Shipping on eligible listings there is no international fee. Separately, when eBay converts your funds because you sell on another eBay site, a seller currency conversion charge applies: 3% for US-registered sellers now, rising to 3.25% from October 14, 2026. The calculator includes the 1.65% international fee when you tick the international buyer box, but not the currency conversion charge. Sellers registered outside the US are charged under their own country's fees.

What does eBay Promoted Listings cost?

Promoted Listings is optional and billed separately from the final value fee. With the general strategy you choose an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the total amount of the sale (item price, shipping, tax and other fees), and you pay only when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days. The priority strategy charges per click instead. Enter your ad rate in the calculator to see the ad fee and its effect on your profit, and leave it at 0 if you do not promote the listing.

Which eBay fees does this calculator leave out?

It leaves out optional listing upgrades (for example Bold, $4.00 on a fixed-price listing), the $20.00 dispute fee when you are found responsible for a disputed amount such as a chargeback, the additional final value fees eBay adds when your seller level is Below Standard (6%, or 7% after four or more consecutive months) or your rate of "item not as described" returns is Very High (5%, or 6% after four or more months), the seller currency conversion charge, and fees for eBay Live, vehicles and real estate. It prices one item per order. Insertion fees are an option because they only apply once your monthly free listings are used up.

How does the calculator work out profit and margin?

Net payout is the item price plus the shipping you charge, minus all eBay fees. Profit is the net payout minus your cost of goods and the shipping you pay. Margin is profit divided by item price plus shipping charged. With the starting numbers, a $50.00 item with $5.00 shipping and no Store pays $7.88 in fees (13.6% of $55.00 plus $0.40), leaves a $47.12 payout, and makes $22.12 profit on $20.00 of goods and $5.00 of shipping, a margin of 40.2%.

Is this eBay fee calculator free, and how current is it?

It is free, with no signup. The fee data was checked against eBay's published fee pages on September 29, 2026. eBay updates its fees, and they differ by category, Store level and country, so confirm the final figure on eBay's own fee pages before you price a listing. Sellers registered outside the US are charged under their own country's fee schedule, which this calculator does not cover.
